EFFECTIVE BUSINESS WRITING IS AN IMPORTANT SKILL FOR EVERY COPYWRITER.

Some copywriters don’t get the hang of it. One of my skills is that I know how to read a balance sheet and a P&L. I’ve been working with businesses now for 25 years with every kind of industry, every kind of business. I make sure I get to know the business I am writing for. You need to know your clients.

I don’t know how many times I’ve seen bad business writing from copywriters. Some make grammatical errors. Others are just too wordy, their copy needs to be cut. Then there are those who revert to jargon.

All of these slip ups risk losing the reader.

HERE ARE FIVE WAYS I AVOID THAT AND MAKE SURE MY COPY HAS GOOD BUSINESS WRITING:

1. Know the audience

It is important to understand the audience you’re writing for. You should assess how much the audience actually knows. This will allow you to present it in a fresh way. What categories do they fall into? Are they experts? Seasoned investors? Technicians?

2. Stick to what’s important

This is crucial. I have seen so many copywriters ignore the bottom line.  People tend to skim through business documents. So you need to do so research and identify what’s most important. Then put  it close to the top.

3. Don’t get wordy

Including unnecessary information and taking too long to get to a point will lose readers. You should avoid using too many words.   Streamline sentences and paragraphs.

4. Don’t make spelling and grammar mistakes

Spelling and grammar mistakes are common in business documents. Proof the copy carefully..

5. Use the right tone

Make sure the copy has an appropriate tone. It shouldn’t be casual but if it’s too formal, you will risk coming across as rude and insincere. The communication needs to be personable, much in the same way that would be when talking to a peer or a supervisor in a cordial manner
