GOP war games

In the fifth debate between the Republican candidates, it was all about testosterone. And that included Carly Fiorona.

As Chemi Salev writes in Ha’aretz, it was if they were compensating for a childhood devoid of war games such as Risk or Battlefield 3, the nine GOP contenders smashed, bombed, liquidated or otherwise destroyed America’s enemies, unlike the country’s current weakling-in-chief, Barack Obama.

Ted Cruz said he wanted to carpet bomb Islamic State fighters. The Texas senator said the United States should use "overwhelming air power" against the militant group.

Not to be outdone, Ben Carson said the was ok with killing thousands of children and civilians.

Asked by one person how Donald Trump’s view that it was ok to kill the families of ISIS members made the US any different from ISIS, Trump replied: “We have to be much tougher. We have to be much stronger than we’ve been… I would be very, very firm with families. Frankly, that will make people think because they may not care much about their lives, but they do care, believe it or not, about their families’ lives.”

Meanwhile Chris Christie was talking about shooting down Russian planes (“Not only would I be prepared to do it, I would do it. A no-fly zone means a no-fly zone. That’s what it means. Maybe because I’m from New Jersey I have this kind of plain-language hang up,” Christie said. “Yes, we would shoot down the planes of Russian pilots, if in fact they were stupid enough to think that this President is the same feckless weakling that the President we have in the Oval Office is right now.”) and starting a cyber war with China.

And finally, there was Carly Fiorina talking about bringing back the warrior generals.

It’s a pity no-one pointed out to these people that the US is already the world’s biggest military spender by a long shot.

So what are they doing talking about unleashing all this firepower on a rag tag army of terrorists that don't have the firepower of the US armed forces. Islamic State has no air force or navy to counter the US, it can be easily contained.

What is it about a bunch of Muslims that makes the US abandon its traditional values?
